We are at the transition from a rational, industrial paradigm of separateness to a non-linear, organic paradigm of interconnectedness. Today’s dominant directions in business and politics are still based on the belief in Adam Smith’s ‘invisible hand’: on the premise that the good of the whole will be best served by a narrow focus of each individual, organization, and country on their self-interest in the short term and in externally defined ways. At the same time this paradigm is reaching its social and ecological limits. Also, fundamentally different ways of organizing and leading indicate the huge human potential that lies hidden in our organizations and in ourselves as leaders of our lives.
The paradigm shift is from separateness to connectedness. A sustainable world requires the strengthening of connection between humanity and ecology, between organizations and society, between individuals and their organizations, and between people and their true identities. As Abraham Maslow said in an interview with Claus Otto Scharmer:

“People who have achieved their identity are causers instead of being caused”
